The Spell of Coming (or Going) is a model of embodying consciousness in poetic form. The duality of memory - the presence of the absent - haunts these pages even as Bushi's exquisite imagistic imagination confronts us with the experience of human realities inexpressible in literal speech. Though diverse and daringly inventive in form, the poems nevertheless sequence together into a sustained and unsentimental exploration of love, death, loss and the way our minds grapple with the ineffable, the transcendent, the uncontrollable. Fierce, tender, innovative, and rich with surprise and mystery, it is an absolute must read!
Long after tragedies, one is like an amnesiac, both flooded with strange memory and tortured by nostalgia, they struggle to remake the present while being bombarded by constant future. This watery world, where the psyche is most raw,
this death-space of clairvoyance and subversiveness, is one space in which Mary Lou Buschi, courageously writes from.
For me, The Spell of Coming or Going is reminiscent of the lost children from my childhood that I suppose are all grown-up now or maybe just gone. And maybe that they never really happened...?
But while Mary Lou calls up the dead or long forgot she does not a forget us the sweet absurdities of life, nor the pleasure that comes with remembering and remaking the anxieties of youth and she reminds us as well of the impossibility of forgetting the vanished things.
So, Mary Lou's poems are stuffed with the slippery apparition of memory and maintain poise in that fragile space we could call pre-forgetting. And in this impossible world of everyday unreal reality, we search frantically for tangibles. Like when a family struggles to make sense of death with a funeral. We lash out for a sense of control.
It's true, Mary Lou's poems are about remembrance, but they are not about wallowing. They are not about glorifying death. They are, to me, about actively reviving the past, and worshiping the ethereality of memory. Not mourning what was lost, but celebrating the new and vibrant meanings that conjured memory have on the present. These poems are not sad and these poems
are not happy. These poems are woven with the thick inexplicable stuff of dreams.
The poet W.H. Auden said that "Death is the sound of distant thunder at a picnic."I'd say that Mary Lou Buschi's poems in The Spell of Coming or Going is the good food in the rain.
